Sneden joined the Union Army after the fall of Fort Sumter in 1861 and began his military life as an infantry private who was involved in many skirmishes. By 1862 he turned his talents for sketching into an appointment as a map maker at army headquarters in Washington DC. For two years he saw first hand many of the Civil War's greatest campaigns. In 1863, Sneden was captured by Rebel forces and transferred to the infamous Andersonville prison. He survived his internment and the ravages of the war, all along maintaining a diary and making sketches of his environment. He died of old age in 1918. In 1994, Sneden's four scrapbooks and more than 500 hundred watercolor sketches were found in bank vault, as was a five thousand page illustraed memoir. That material is here published for the first time.
