This story tells of America's greatest wartime disaster at sea, the sinking of the Indianapols with the loss of 880 lives because of the incompetence of admirals, officers and gentlemen. On July 30, 1945, four days after delivering the components of the Hiroshima bomb to Tinian, the Indianapolis was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. 400 went down with the ship. Of the 800 who safely abandoned her, only 316 survived the shark infested waters.
