This is the Victorian army as it really was, seen through the eye of the camera: its popular heroes, men like Gordon and Kitchener; its equipment and training, and its men, both on active service and at leisure, hunting in India or sight-seeing in Egypt. The Victorian period was a busy time for the military; the demands of the Empire were many, varied and frequent. The Pax Britannica was maintained only by incessant small wars, campaigns and punitive expeditions. Over 200 of these were fought during Victoria's sixty-four year reign at an average of four a year. David Clammer sets the scene in an introduction and then describes in separate chapters the men, their equip ment and uniform, training, transport and communications, recreations and, in the longest chapter, the campaigns themselves. He allows the photographs to tell the story but he amplifies them all with very full captions, thus giving in admirably full detail a remarkable visual history of the much lauded but often hard-pressed and neglected 'Soldiers of the Queen'.
