SIMBINE - Mozambique - (1976 -
Simbine was born and raised in Maputo, Mozambique and has been painting for nearly a decade. Simbine first became involved in art through preparing canvases for a friend who was an artist. He then began personally producing batiks, which are pieces of art that utilize recycled denim as a makeshift canvas. By working alongside local artists, Simbine developed an unmistakable technique influenced by traditional African styles that depict scenes from rural Mozambican life. Recurring themes from his pieces include portrayals of traditional ceremonies, music and customs. “Producing art is a way for me to depict aspects of Mozambican life, but it is also a livelihood. It allows me to support my family and provide an education for my two daughters.” Simbine’s works have been displayed in galleries across Mozambique.
