WONDERFUL CALIFORNIA, California The Golden State
In 1542 Cabrillo sailed into San Diego Harbor and here California began. Between 1769 and 1776 Fray Junipero Serra started from San Diego, traveling through the state back and forth, founding twenty-three missions. In 1848 Marshall discovered gold, then came the rush of '49.
The Visitor to California of today cannot appreciate the hardships the pioneers had to endure in reaching the Golden State. From the East they crossed the mountains and plains in prairie schooners, on foot or on horseback, risking their lives in fording streams, fighting Indians and buffalo and overcoming enumerable other difficulties. From the days of '49 all has been changed, the state today being accessible under most comfortable conditions from any direction.
From Mt. Shasta in the North to the Mexican Border in the South, and from the Sierra Mountain Range on the East to the Beautiful Pacific on the West, the state of California abounds in endless opportunities, for the business man, the home seeker and the traveler. The population of the state is about 2,500,000 while the land are covers 155,980 square miles.
The climatic conditions are ideal. The state produces citrus and other fruits of every description and all kinds of agricultural products, also oil and mineral of great variety. The deserts also produce great wealth in borax, potash, and other chemicals. Cattle thrive in the open throughout the year on account of the favorable climate conditions. Timber of many varieties cover thousands of acres, and the big trees of California are one of the Wonders of the World. The scenic grandeur of the state include the beautiful Yosemite Valley, Snow Capped Mountain Ranges, Inland Lakes, Fruit Groves, Historical Missions and Seaside Resorts all combining to make California the most wondeful state in the union
