Kachina Silkscreen - Bow & Rattle
(Item: KACHINA2)
The Story of the Kachinas - Many years ago, a terrible drought came upon the Hopi people. They had complete crop failures, which led the people to starvation. Suddenly they heard strange sounds from the foot of the big mountain nearby, and groups of costumed dancing figures appeared. They said they were Kachinas and that they had brought water and food to relieve the suffering caused by the drought. From that time on, the Hopi have impersonated these Kachinas throughout their ceremonial calendar, every Kachina having their very own cosutme representing various spirits of animals, mountains, the elements, etc. In these dances at various times of the season only the men take part whether they are portraying male or female Kachinas and the prayers of the people are given to the Kachinas to carry to the Great Spirit. Hopi children believe in Kachinas as other children believe in Santa Claus. Kachina dolls are given to the children so they may learn the different kinds which take place in the various dances, and are made of cottonwood root by parents or relatives. They are not used as toys. The Hopi recognize over two hundred different types of Kachinas. Pictured here is an authentic Kachina painted directly from the doll. This is a Vintage Silkscreen.
