Agapito Labios (Mexican,1898-1996)
"Portrait of a Young Girl"
Agapito Labios was born in September, 1898 in Pachuca, Hildago, Mexico
He took an active part in the Mexican Revolution and was put in prision. There he started painting on cell walls. His career began when the town's mayor saw his talent and ordered him to paint his two little girls.
Self taught, Labios made a living as an artist, doing mostly portraits of children, beginning by selling on Sundays in the Mercado de la Lagunilla (the Thieves Market). Later he opened a shop in Mexico City called the Mercado de Artesanias.
