Eric Gibberd Watercolor

(Item: GIBBERD3S)
ERIC GIBBERD, "Eric Gibberd was born in London, England in 1897. When he was ten years of age it was discovered that his eyesight was seriously failing. Consultation with European specialists, especially Sir Anderson Critchett, the king's occulist, resulted in the decision of his family to emigrate to western Canada. Thus in 1907 formal schooling for his was foregone. Tutored by his father and mother, Eric Gibberd did not use books from his tenth to his seventeenth year. Then his father died and he started to work to support his mother and four younger sisters.

A rather remarkable career ensued. From an assistant in the advertising department of the Hudson Bay Company store in Edmonton, Alberta, he moved on in twelve years to leadership in United States retail advertising.

During the war Eric Gibberd met and subsequently married Pauline Seeberger Sowers, a woman devoted to the arts. It was she who inspired him and sparked his latent talent to paint. He traveled to seek distinguished teachers of painting, Ejnar Hansen and Oscar van Young in Los Angeles; Edel Noth in Salzburg; Ramon Rogent in Barcelona; and Emil Bisttram in Taos. His early appreciation of the painting of Paul Cezanne was followed by dedicated study of the master's work and opportunities to use the master's studio and explore the country that he made famous around Aix en Provence.

In 1952 Gibberd's first exhibition in Paris was followed by shows in London, Amsterdam and Barcelona. Shortly after moving to New Mexico, he called on me (Lemon Saks) in Denver, and in 1957 we arranged his first important exhibition in this area. It was eminently successful. The Denver Post commissioned a cover for the Empire Magazine and reproduced a number of his works in color. Many of those who have become avid collectors of his paintings acquired their first Gibberd at that time." Lemon Saks - Introduction- The Painting of Gibberd.
